At Pooles Park we use Talk for Writing in Years 1 and 2. We also follow the Literacy and Language scheme of learning in Years 2-6.
Talk for writing is an approach which enables children to rehearse their ideas before writing. This allows the children to think about and discuss each part of the writing process. When writing, children need to consider the content, layout, correct grammar, accurate spelling, legible, regularly sized, fluent and joined handwriting.
Writing lessons are constructed carefully to teach different elements of writing across a range of genres through focused learning outcomes and success criteria. Spelling, punctuation and grammar are taught separately but with regular opportunity to put the skills learned into practice.
Children new to English are given support according to their needs. This includes ensuring inclusive classroom environments, where written and verbal language is alongside visuals. Differentiated work is planned for children new to English, with careful pupil grouping to ensure good models of English are provided. When deemed necessary there may be provision made for a period of one to one, or small group focused support.
